Listen to Obituary

“Mitz” Beloved daughter of Herbert and Wilma Johnson. Sister of George Johnson, Sr. (deceased) and Mary Louise (ML) Burkett. Married for 54 years to Raymond Hufford, Sr. (deceased) on July 14,1956 until his death on October 3, 2010. Mitz was the mother of Carolyn L. Hufford (Thomas Yanks), Jane Becerra (Jerry) and Ray Hufford, Jr. (Lynne). She also was the proud grandmother of John Yanks (Emily), Joseph Yanks (Thomas Backus), Gabrielle Hufford and Lindsay Hufford.

Mitz and Ray, Sr. ran the family business (H&H Pretzel Co) together for many years. Together, their talents made the business a success. Mitz was an Honors student (John Marshall High School), accomplished pianist, executive secretary, Girl Scout Troop Leader, camp advisor and community activist. She was named West Park Citizen of the Year by the West Park Community Council. Mitz’s variety of interests included reading, birdwatching, opera, The Cleveland Orchestra and all kinds of movies. She was known for her fabulous sense of humor right up to the end of her life, as anyone at Ennis Court will attest.

Mitz and Ray, Sr. travelled extensively in their later years. They both enjoyed their river cruises more than any other trips. There were always family vacations when the kids were growing up. It was important to Mitz that her children had many interesting experiences, from searching for beach glass to touring Gettysburg, Colonial Williamsburg and Washington DC. The memories from these trips will live forever.

Mitz always had time to listen and over the years she had influence in many lives. She imbued a sense of justice and fairness in all of her children. She solved problems at the kitchen table with her kindness, intelligence and common sense. She was the best Mom ever.

After Ray’s death, she moved out of their home in Lakewood, and she moved to the Presidential Apartments in Rocky River, where she made many friends. Special thanks go to Rose Care for helping her in her later years. The companionship and compassion they provided her with was immeasurable. Subsequently, the staff at Ennis Court in Lakewood embraced her and the family is grateful for the care they provided in her last years.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Mitz's Life at Brennans Party Center, 13000 Triskett Rd, Cleveland 44111, on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at 1 p.m. Lunch will be served. Charitable contributions can be made in her name to the charity of your choice. Mitz also asked that we treat each other with kindness and respect in her memory.

“To weep is to make less the depth of grief.” William Shakespeare, Henry VI, Part 3 - Act 2, scene 1.
