Eric Smith, age 36, of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, at Cleveland Clinic Hospital after a long illness. A true warrior, Eric was an inspiration to all who knew him. He spent the last 12 years demonstrating remarkable strength and courage -- surviving acute lymphoblastic leukemia, only to endure 15 continuous months in the ICU, “One day at a time,” as he often said. Relentlessly, he continued fighting through complications following a successful double lung transplant.
After graduating from Berea High School in 2008, Eric (AKA “Smitty”) earned an associate degree in law enforcement studies. Though his health prevented him from pursuing a traditional career, he worked part-time with dedication until he was no longer able.
Eric’s life was defined not only by perseverance, but by his deep love for life and the people around him. He enjoyed spending time with friends taking trips to Cedar Point, watching Cleveland sports, cooking out, playing fantasy football, and video games. Over time, Eric became a cherished mentor to his friends’ children and a trusted dog sitter for their pets.
Eric’s greatest pride was Bandit, his loyal dog companion who stood by him through countless challenges. A close second was his nephew, Vincent, whom he adored. Eric found immense joy in being a fun, loving uncle and treasured every moment spent watching and entertaining him.
Eric is survived by his devoted mother, Rebecca Smith of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; his father, Douglas (Linda) Smith of Bluffton, South Carolina; his sister, Holly (Danny) Brihan of Strongsville, Ohio, and their son, Vincent Brihan; his step-siblings, Amy and Erick; and his half-sister, Kayla. He also leaves behind his grandmother, Belva Smith, and the late Wilbur Smith; grandmother Helen Lawer, and the late Peter Lawer; in addition to a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and lifelong friends. Eric shared a deep brotherly bond with his two best friends, Bret Babbits Jr. and Michael Babbits who, along with all who knew him, will sadly miss him. We take comfort in knowing Eric is at peace and no longer suffering.
In honor of Eric's love for Cleveland sports, family and friends are encouraged to wear their favorite Cleveland sports team apparel to the service.
Family and friends received at THE RIPEPI FUNERAL HOME, 5762 PEARL RD. (AT SNOW RD.), WEDNESDAY MAY 6, 2026 from 4-8 p.m. with a service at 7:30 p.m.
