Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Well, folks, our little spitfire Frances Barrett, 84, passed away on November 10, 2025.

Frances was born in Uniontown, PA on February 28, 1941, to the late Joseph and Mary (nee Satanek) Baran. She was the youngest of 11 children. Eight of the 11 children made it to adulthood; Frances is preceded in death by her brothers Joseph Baran, Charles Baran (Mary Macechko), George Baran (Alice Petrus), and John Baran and her sisters Elizabeth Baran, Mary Baran, Helen Baran, Sophie Masterbray (Frank), Ann Miscovich (Michael), and Eleanor Sofchek (Robert).

Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Regis Barrett. They were married for 64 years. She leaves behind her two children, Joseph Barrett (Leslie), and Amy Barrett, along with her much-loved little dog, Haley. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and many friends.

Frances grew up in Uniontown, PA. She graduated from South Union High School in 1959. While she would never admit that she married the love of her life, she did, in fact do so in September of 1960. She met Regis in the backseat of a car while catching a ride with high school friends. This is, perhaps, why she didn’t want her kids driving until they were 30.

A few years later, they moved to Newcastle, PA and then they settled in Cleveland, Ohio. After spending several years raising two kids and a husband, she joined the workforce. Her career entailed working in various booths. First, she worked in a Fotomat kiosk, then as a bank teller, and finally she worked for the Ohio Turnpike as a toll taker for 17 years. She retired from the Turnpike in February of 2001. Working in a toll booth provided a lot of insight into humanity—good and bad. However, to the guy that liked to go through the toll gates naked as a jaybird, she was neither flustered nor impressed… at all.

Her wicked sense of humor, love of the Rolling Stones, stuffed cabbage, pagach, nut-rolls, and chocolate chip cookies will be missed by many.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network www.pancan.org or any charity that helps women and children.

Service at the funeral home Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 2 p.m. Family and friends received at THE RIPEPI FUNERAL HOME, 5762 PEARL RD. (AT SNOW RD.), SATURDAY 12 – 2 P.M.
