JOHN “JAY” GALLAGHER, beloved son of Judge Patrick F. and Eileen B. Gallagher (both deceased); dearest brother of Pat (Cyndie), Dr. Mike (Cathy), Dr. Tim (deceased) (Lynn) and CAPT Colleen Gallagher Thomas, USN ret (Greg); best friend and loving partner of Kathleen Carvin; beloved uncle and great-uncle with a countless number of friends and colleagues who will forever cherish his memory. Jay Gallagher, a devoted public servant, gifted athlete and proud Irishman, passed away much too soon on February 13, 2025, at the age of 63. Known for his sharp wit, love of the law, deep knowledge of sports and ability to connect with anyone, Jay was truly one of a kind. A lifelong Clevelander, Jay was a proud graduate of St. Ignatius High School (Class of 1979), the University of Dayton (Class of 1983), and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (Class of 1986). Before that, he attended St. Charles School in Parma, where he formed lifelong friendships; bonds that lasted over 50 years and remained a cornerstone of his life. For 33 years, Jay served as an Assistant Prosecutor for Cuyahoga County where he upheld justice with fairness and integrity. His love for the law extended beyond the courtroom. He and his father would “kibitz” and analyze legal cases for hours on end, debating strategies and breaking down court cases. Jay was a fixture in downtown Cleveland, often seen running through the streets at lunchtime, from the courthouse in his suit and tie, no matter the weather to get his workout in. His passion for fitness and competition was evident in every sport he played. As a young athlete he played baseball at State Road Park, showcasing his incredible arm by throwing out runners from the outfield to home plate. In the winter he took to the ice, playing hockey at Forestwood Rink or braving the cold nights skating at Ridgewood Lake. On the basketball court his Jordan-esque jump shot was nearly automatic, making him a formidable competitor. Golf, running and any game involving a ball, Jay excelled in them all. His encyclopedic knowledge of sports and athletes made every conversation more entertaining and he could debate stats with the best of them. If you were on a team with Jay, you always knew he would keep you in the game with his skill, determination, and sheer will to win. Proud of his Irish heritage, Jay embraced the traditions, music and storytelling of his ancestors. He had a natural gift for making people feel welcome, and no matter where he went, he always knew someone or quickly made a new friend. His ability to remember people, their families, and their stories was something truly special. His personality earned him many nicknames over the years, including Running Jay, JJ, Jaybird, and J Galls; each one a testament to the friendships and memories he created along the way. Jay had a heart for helping others. Whether it was a friend or family member, he was always willing to lend a hand. He was especially devoted to his nieces and nephews, cheering them on at their sporting events, offering advice when they faced challenges, and always being their biggest supporter. His love and encouragement left a lasting impact on their lives. He cherished every moment spent with his three older brothers and younger sister. Whether it was a party, a game, or a simple family dinner, Jay always made it a priority to be there. True to the spirit of scripture, “where two or more are gathered”, Jay was there, embracing the joy of togetherness and happiness of family. A dedicated fan of the Cavaliers, Browns and Guardians, he loved going to Arizona for Spring Training and attended as many home games as possible. Jay was a member of the Cleveland Bar Association and the Euclid Eagles Aerie 2221. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Sláinte, Jay
